SMSF advice in Sydney
Control is useful when the structure, costs and workload still make sense.
Hill Private Wealth provides SMSF advice in Sydney from Level 11, 10 Carrington Street, Sydney NSW 2000. We help trustees and prospective trustees think through whether a self-managed super fund fits, how strategy and investments sit inside the fund, and what ongoing administration and compliance really involve. Evan Hill is a CFP® and SMSF Specialist Adviser (AR 404669), CAR of MTN Wealth Pty Ltd AFSL 700327.

What an SMSF is (in plain terms)
A self-managed superannuation fund is a private super fund you run yourself (with up to six members under current rules). You are typically both trustee and member, which means investment choice and responsibility land closer to you than in a large retail or industry fund.
That control is the point for some households. It is also the cost. An SMSF is not “set and forget”. Legislation changes. Investments need a reason. Administration and audit are real work and real fees. Super and tax figures change; verify current caps and rules on ato.gov.au when you act.
Who SMSF advice is for
This page is for people in Sydney and surrounds who are already in an SMSF, or seriously considering one, and want advice that respects how much is at stake.
Often that means:
Business owners with super and company decisions that interact
Professionals with larger balances who want a clear investment framework inside the fund
Families coordinating more than one member or a change in membership
Trustees who inherited a fund that was never properly organised
It is a weaker fit if you want a product pushed, or if you want someone else to hold all the responsibility while you stay uninvolved.
Questions we work through first
Look, the useful SMSF conversation is rarely “should everyone have one?”. It is a set of practical questions:
What problem is the SMSF solving that your current fund does not: investment access, estate design, business-related strategy, consolidation, transparency?
What will it cost in dollars and in trustee time, including accounting, audit, advice and platform or brokerage?
Who will actually do the work: you, an administrator, an adviser, an accountant, and where do hand-offs fail?
What sits inside the fund today (or would): cash, listed assets, property, related-party issues, concentration?
What happens if life changes: divorce, death, incapacity, a member leaving, a property that will not sell quickly?
Balance size matters. So do costs, skills, time and what you would do with the control. We do not publish a universal “minimum balance” rule. Those marketing shortcuts skip the real trade-offs.
How HPW works on SMSF
Here’s how it works when we engage.
Fit and facts. We confirm whether SMSF advice is even the right engagement, gather trust deeds, member reports, investment holdings, loans and related entities, and put a clean picture on one page.
Options, not theatre. You get the main idea, why it might help, the drawbacks and the risks. That may include “stay in your current fund”, “fix administration first”, or “change investment policy before changing structure”.
Implementation support where scoped. If we proceed, we coordinate with your accountant and administrator rather than pretending one firm does every job in isolation.
Ongoing review if you want it. Markets move. Contribution room changes. A property thesis ages. Reviews exist so the fund still matches the reason you have it.
You outsource the complexity. You keep control of trustee decisions that are yours to make.
SMSF and property (without the sales pitch)
Property inside an SMSF is a common search topic in Sydney. It is also where people skip steps.
Borrowing, valuations, related-party rules, liquidity for pensions, concentration risk and exit plans all matter. A single property can dominate a fund. That can work for some strategies. It can also leave a fund fragile if cash flow or a member’s retirement date does not cooperate.
If property is on your mind, bring the numbers and the timeline. We will talk mechanism and risk, not glossy assumptions.
Setup, wind-up and “someone else set this up”
We see three common starting points:
Considering setup: compare SMSF vs staying put on costs, control and workload before you sign anything.
Existing fund, unclear strategy: clean data, investment policy, contribution and pension settings, and whether the structure still earns its keep.
Exit or successor planning: wind-up, rollover, or membership change done deliberately rather than under pressure.
Whichever starting point you are in, discovery is a conversation, not a free portfolio pitch.
Common SMSF questions
Is an SMSF worth it?
It depends on costs, time, skills, what you would do with the control, and the problem you are trying to solve. Balance is one factor, not a single magic number.
Can you set up an SMSF for me?
Setup involves legal, administrative and advice steps. We advise on whether setup makes sense and how strategy should look. Implementation is coordinated with the right parties for your situation.
Do you give SMSF property advice?
We discuss property as part of whole-of-fund strategy and risk, including liquidity and concentration. We do not run a property sales process.
How is HPW paid?
We are paid by our clients for advice. We do not receive commissions from product providers. We do not accept insurance commissions. Exact fees are scoped in writing.
Do I need to be in Sydney?
Our office is in Sydney CBD. Many clients are Sydney-based. Fit matters more than postcode, but local meetings are straightforward if you are nearby.
What should I bring to a first meeting?
Trust deed and recent member/fund reports if you have an SMSF, super statements if you do not, a simple list of goals and constraints, and the decision you want help with.
Is this personal advice?
This page is general information. Personal advice only happens when we have properly considered your situation under an engagement.
